STORAGE TIPS:

>> Make a list of all of the packing and storage supplies you’ll need, such as: boxes, pallets, tape, marking pens, bubble wrap, “stuffing,” furniture protectors, locks, etc.

>> Use boxes that are a uniform size, they’re easier to stack. Remember; keep the heavy ones on the bottom and the light ones on top-to avoid them toppling over. Label each storage box on all 6 sizes, in case it gets moved you won’t have to guess what it is.

>> You might also want to you plastic containers to store items for extra protection.

>> Try to fill your boxes to the top, even if it’s just with padding, or paper. Storage boxes that are not filled to the top have a tendency to collapse.

>> Leave small walkways between the boxes and furniture in your storage unit so you can easily get to the items you want without having to move anything around.

>>Leave a space between your stuff and the self storage unit’s wall to allow for air to circulate within the unit, because the humidity in your storage unit can cause your furniture to warp, and other items, such as appliances, to mildew.

>> Lay plastic sheeting on the floor and stack boxes on top of wooden pallets to prevent condensation damage. You can also use old linens or other fabrics, to protect your storage from dust.

>> Although our storage units are secured, it is best to pack your storage unit so that your most valuable items are at the back, and purchase a high quality padlock to put on the door.

>> If you’re putting any metal objects into storage, treat them with a rust protector first, or wipe them down with an oily rag. This would include items such as lawn mowers, or filing cabinets.

>> If you are storing a refrigerator in your unit leave the door open to prevent mold from growing inside. Make sure it is clean first; this also goes for any other appliances that you are storing as well.

>> If you are storing paintings, mirrors, or other similar items do not store flat, but store on their ends-reduces the chances of something falling on them and breaking the glass. Also, some people choose to cover these items in bubble wrap or an old blanket to help cushion and protect them.

>> Under no circumstances should you keep anything flammable or combustible in your self storage unit. This means no gasoline, oil, cleaning fluids or paint thinner. If you’re storing any machinery that runs on gas, drain the tank before you store it.

>> It is also a good idea to purchase insurance because not all homeowner’s insurance will cover storage units. Check with your insurance provider.
